Description
Fir honey (honeydew honey) like all Greek honeys, is rich in polyphenols and phenolic acids, with significant antioxidant, antimicrobial & anti-inflammatory activity. It has a low glucose content, with little effect on blood serum insulin levels, offering advantages in glycemic control while at the same time it is rich in trace elements such as potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and iron.
It is produced by bees collecting honeydew (sugary secretions) from a scale insect species called Marchalina hellenica, which lives on the sap of certain pine trees. It is slightly different way to more typical honeys. In this case, bees gather nectar from honeydew excreted by plant-sucking insects, like greenflies. The typical known method of bees gathering nectar is by honey bees visiting the flowers of blooming plants. High in oligosaccharides, which are known for their prebiotic qualities- aiding digestion.
Its unique properties can be applied directly to the skin as a healing agent. It helps to speed up the healing process of wounds, burns, and sunburn.
