St John’s Wort is an herbaceous perennial plant with extensive creeping rhizomes. Its stems are erect, branched in the upper part and it can grow to 1 meter in height.
St John’s Wort has been used as a medicinal herb for its antidepressant and anti-inflammatory properties for over 2,000 years. St. John’s wort has been used in therapeutics since ancient times. Galen and Dioscorides mention it as a diuretic, healing, emmenagogue and hemostatic. Also in ancient times, it was used as a healing agent for the wounds caused by swords, hence the name sword grass.
